Chapter 7
Christ's Travels, Preaching, and Persecutions
Prophecy of His Journey to Galilee
Nevertheless the gloom will not be upon her who is distressed, as when at first He lightly esteemed the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, and afterward more heavily oppressed her, by the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, in Galilee of the Gentiles. Isaiah 9:1
The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in the land of the shadow of death, upon them a light has shined. Isaiah 9:2
Journey to Galilee Performed
Now when Jesus heard that John had been but in prison, He departed to Galilee. Matthew 4:12
And leaving Nazareth, He came and dwelt in Capernaum, which is by the sea, in the regions of Zebulun and Naphtali. - -13
That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying: The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles: - -15

So He got into a boat, crossed over, and came to His own city. Matthew 9:1
So Jesus arose and followed him, and so did His disciples. - -19
Now it came to pass, when Jesus finished commanding His twelve disciples, that He departed from there to teach and to preach in their cities. - 11:1
When they had crossed over, they came to the land of Gennesaret. - -14:34
Then Jesus went out from there and departed to the region of Tyre and Sidon. - 15:21
And He sent away the multitude, got into the boat, and came to the region of Magdala. - -39
Now it came to pass, when Jesus had finished these sayings, that He departed from Galilee and came to the region of Judea beyond the Jordan. - 19:1
Now when they drew near to Jerusalem, and came to Bethphage, at the Mount of Olives, then Jesus sent two disciples. - 21:1
Travels recorded by St Mark
And immediately the Spirit drove Him into the wilderness. Mark 1:12
On the same day, when evening had come, He said to them, "Let us cross over to the other side." - 4:35
Now when they had left the multitude, they took Him along in the boat as He was. And other little boats were also with Him. - -36
Then they came to the other side of the sea, to the country of the Gadarenes. - 5:1
Then He went out from there and came to His own country, and His disciples followed Him. - 6:1
Immediately He made His disciples get into the boat and go before Him to the other side, to Bethphage, while He sent the multitude away. - -45
When they had crossed over, they came to the land of Gennesaret and anchored there. - -53
And again, departing from the region of Tyre and Sidon, He came through the midst of the region of Decapolis to the Sea of Galilee. - 7:31
And immediately He got into the boat with His disciples and came to the region of Dalmanutha. - 8:10
And He left them, and getting into the boat again, departed to the other side. - -13
Now when they came near Jerusalem, to Bethphage and Bethany, at the Mount of Olives, He sent out two of His disciples. - -11:1
And Jesus went into Jerusalem and into the temple. So when He had looked around at all things, as the hour was already late, He went out to Bethany with the twelve. Mark 11:11
And when evening had come, He went out of the city. - -19
Then they came again to Jerusalem. And as He was walking in the temple, the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders came to Him. - -27
Travels Recorded by St Luke
Then Jesus, being filled with the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness. Luke 4:1
Now when He concluded all His sayings in the hearing of the people, He entered Capernaum. - 7:1
Then they sailed to the country of the Gadarenes, which is opposite Galilee. - 8:26
Now it came to pass, when the time had come for Him to be received up, that He steadfastly set His face to go to Jerusalem. Luke 9:51 (See Note 8)
And He went through the cities and villages, teaching, and journeying toward Jerusalem. - 13:22
Now it happened as He went to Jerusalem that He passed through the midst of Samaria and Galilee. - 17:11
Then Jesus entered and passed through Jericho. - 19:1
When He had said this, He went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. --28
And coming out, He went to the Mount of Olives, as He was accustomed, and His disciples also followed Him.

Christ's Travels recorded by St John
He left Judea and departed again to Galilee. John 4:3
But He needed to go through Samaria. - -4
So He came to a city of Samaria which is called Sychar, near the plot of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. - -5
Now after the two days He departed from there and went to Galilee. - -43
So when He came to Galilee, the Galileans received Him, having seen all the things He did in Jerusalem at the feast; for they also had gone to the feast. - -45
So Jesus came again to Cana of Galilee where He had made the water wine. And there was a certain nobleman whose son was sick at Capernaum. - -46
After this there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. - 5:1
After these things Jesus went over the Sea of Galilee, which is the Sea of Tiberias. - 6:1
Now it was the Feast of Dedication in Jerusalem, and it was winter. - 10:22
And Jesus walked in the temple, in Solomon's porch. - -23
When Jesus had spoken these words, He went out with His disciples over the Brook Kidron, where there was a garden, which He and His disciples entered. - 18:1
Christ's Preaching Foretold
I have proclaimed the good news of righteousness in the great congregation; Indeed, I do not restrain my lips, O LORD, You Yourself know. Psalm 40:9
I have not hidden Your righteousness within my heart; I have declared Your faithfulness and Your salvation; I have not concealed Your lovingkindness and Your truth from the great congregation. Psalm 40:10
But with righteousness He shall judge the poor, and decide with equity for the meek of the earth; He shall strike the earth with the rod of His mouth, and with the breath of His lips He shall slay the wicked. Isaiah 11:4
"The Redeemer will come to Zion, and to those who turn from transgression in Jacob," says the LORD. - 59:20
The Spirit of the LORD GOD is upon Me, because the LORD has anointed Me to preach good tidings to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound. - 61:1
To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD, and the day of vengeance of our
GOD; to comfort all who mourn. - -2
To console those who mourn in Zion, to give them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they may be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that He may be glorified." - -3
But who can endure the day of His coming? And who can stand when He appears? For He is like a refiner's fire and like fullers' soap. Malachi 3:2
He will sit as a refiner and a purifier of silver; He will purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer to the LORD an offering in righteousness. - -3
Application of The Prophecy
"The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor, He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed." Luke 4:18
"To preach the acceptable year of the LORD." - -19
Then He closed the book, and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all who were in the synagogue were fixed on Him. - -20
And He began to say to them, "Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing." - -21
Christ Preaching
And seeing the multitudes, He went up on a mountain, and when He was seated His disciples came to Him. Matthew 5:1
Then He opened His mouth and taught them, saying: - -2
Now after John was put in prison, Jesus came to Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of GOD. Mark 1:14
Then He went out again by the sea; and all the multitude came to Him, and He taught them. - 2:13
And again He began to teach by the sea. And a great multitude was gathered to Him, so that He got into a boat and sat in it on the sea; and the whole multitude was on the land facing the sea. - 4:1
And Jesus, when He came out, saw a great multitude and was moved with compassion for them, because they were like sheep not having a shepherd. So He began to teach them many things. - 6:34
Then He arose from there and came to the region of Judea by the other side of the Jordan. And the people gathered to Him again, and as He was accustomed, He taught them again. Mark 10:1
Then He got into one of the boats, which was Simon's, and asked him to put out a little from the land. And He sat down and taught the multitudes from the boat. Luke 5:3
Now it came to pass, afterward, that He went through every city and village, preaching and bringing the glad tidings of the kingdom of GOD. And the twelve were with Him. - 8:1
But when the multitudes knew it, they followed Him; and He received them and spoke to them about the kingdom of GOD, and healed those who had need of healing. - 9:11
Christ preaches in Synagogues
And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people. Matthew 9:35
Now when He had departed from there He went into their synagogue. - 12:9
Then they went into Capernaum, and immediately on the Sabbath He entered the synagogue and taught. Mark 1:21
But He said to them, "Let us go into the next towns, that I may preach there also, because for this purpose I have come forth." - -38
And He was preaching in their synagogues throughout all Galilee, and casting out demons. - -39
And He entered the synagogue again and a man was there who had a withered hand. - 3:1
And they watched Him closely, whether He would heal him on the Sabbath, so that they might accuse Him.

And when the Sabbath had come, He began to teach in the synagogue. And many hearing Him were astonished, saying, "Where did this Man get these things?" And what wisdom is this which is given to Him, that such mighty works are performed by His hands! - 6:2
And He taught in their synagogues, being glorified by all. Luke 4:15
Then He went down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and was teaching them on the Sabbaths. - -31
But He said to them, "I must preach the kingdom of GOD to the other cities also, because for this purpose I have been sent." - -43
And He was preaching in the synagogues of Galilee. - -44
Now He was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath. - 13:10
These things He said in the synagogue as He taught in Capernaum. John 6:59
Christ preaches in the Temple
Now it happened on one of those days, as He taught the people in the temple and preached the gospel, that the chief priests and the scribes, together with the elders, confronted Him. Luke 20:1
And in the daytime He was teaching in the temple, but at night He went out and stayed on the mountain called Olivet. - 21:37
Then early in the morning all the people came to Him in the temple to hear Him. - -38
Now about the middle of the feast Jesus went up into the temple and taught. John 7:14
But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. - 8:1
But early in the morning He came again into the temple, and all the people came to Him; and He sat down and taught them. - -2
General Remarks
"These things I have spoken to you while being present with you." John 14:25
"These things I have spoken to you in figurative language; but the time is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figurative language, but I will tell you plainly about the Father." - 16:25
His disciples said to Him, "See, now You are speaking plainly, and using no figure of speech!" John 16:29
"And I have declared to them Your name, and will declare it, that the love with which You loved Me may be in them, and I in them." - 17:26
Triumphal Entry Foretold
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the LORD! We have blessed you from the house of the LORD. Psalm 118:26
Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your King is coming to you; He is just and having salvation, lowly and riding on a donkey, a colt, the foal of a donkey. Zechariah 9:9
Triumphal Entry
All this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets saying: Matthew 21:4
"Tell the daughter of Zion, behold, your King is coming to you, lowly, and sitting on a donkey, a colt, a foal of a donkey." - -5
But when the chief priests and scribes saw the wonderful things that He did, and the children crying out in the temple and saying, "Hosanna to the Son of David!" they were indignant. - -15
And said to Him, "Do You hear what these are saying?" And Jesus said to them, "Yes. Have you never read, `Out of the mouth of babes and nursing infants You have perfected praise'?" - -16
The next day a great multitude that had come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. John 12:12
Took branches of palm trees and went out to meet Him, and cried out: "Hosanna! `Blessed is He who comes in the name of the LORD!' The King of Israel!" - -13
Then Jesus, when He had found a young donkey, sat on it; as it is written: - -14
"Fear not, daughter of Zion; behold, your King is coming, sitting on a donkey's colt." - -15
His disciples did not understand these things at first; but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things were written about Him and that they had done these things to Him. - -16
Various Persecutions
Then the Pharisees went out and immediately plotted with the Herodians against Him, how they might destroy Him. Mark 3:6
Then all those in the synagogue, when they heard these things, were filled with wrath. Luke 4:28
And rose up and thrust Him out of the city; and they led Him to the brow of the hill on which their city was built, that they might throw Him down over the cliff. - -29
But they were filled with rage, and discussed with one another what they might do to Jesus. - 6:11
On that very day some Pharisees came, saying to Him, "Get out and depart from here, for Herod wants to kill You. - 13:31
The man departed and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well. John 5:15
For this reason the Jews persecuted Jesus, and sought to kill Him, because He had done these things on the Sabbath. John 5:16
"Did not Moses give you the law, and yet none of you keeps the law? Why so you seek to kill Me?" - 7:19
The people answered and said, "You have a demon. Who is seeking to kill You?" - -20
The Pharisees heard the crowd murmuring these things concerning Him, and the Pharisees and the chief priests sent officers to take Him. - -32
"I know that you are Abraham's descendants, but you seek to kill Me, because My word has no place in you." - 8:37
"But now you seek to kill Me, a Man who has told you the truth which I heard from GOD, Abraham did not do this." - 8:40
Then the Jews answered Him, saying, "For a good work we do not stone You, but for blasphemy, and because You, being a Man, make Yourself GOD. - 10:31
Then after this He said to the disciples, "Let us go to Judea again." - 11:7
The disciples said to Him, "Rabbi, lately the Jews sought to stone You, and are You going there again?" - -8
Now both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a command, that if anyone knew where He was, he should report it, that they might seize Him. - -57
Persecutions Evaded
Then the Pharisees went out and took counsel against Him, how they might destroy Him. Matthew 12:14
But when Jesus knew it, He withdrew from there; and great multitudes followed Him, and He healed them all.

After these things Jesus walked in Galilee; for He did not want to walk in Judea, because the Jews sought to kill Him. John 7:1
Then they took up stones to throw at Him; but Jesus hid Himself and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by. - 8:59
Therefore they sought again to seize Him, but He escaped out of their hand. - 10:39
And He went away again beyond the Jordan to the place where John was baptized at first, and there He stayed. - -40
Therefore Jesus no longer walked openly among the Jews, but went from there into the country near the wilderness, to a city called Ephraim, and there remained with His disciples. - 11:54
Popular Protection
Now when the chief priests and Pharisees heard His parables, they perceived that He was speaking of them. Matthew 21:45
But when they sought to lay hands on Him, they feared the multitudes, because they took Him for a prophet. - -46
And the scribes and chief priests heard it and sought how they might destroy Him; for they feared Him, because all the people were astonished at His teaching. Mark 11:18
And they sought to lay hold of Him, but feared the multitude, for they knew He had spoken the parable against them. So they left Him and went away. - -12:12
And He was teaching daily in the temple. But the chief priests, the scribes, and the leaders of the people sought to destroy Him. Luke 19:47
And were unable to do anything; for all the people were very attentive to hear Him. - -48
And the chief priests and the scribes that very hour sought to lay hands on Him, but they feared the people - for they knew that He had spoken this parable against them. Luke 20:19
Invidious Snares
Then the Pharisees went and plotted how they might entangle Him in His talk. Matthew 22:15
And they sent Him their disciples with the Herodians, saying, "Teacher, we know that You are true, and teach the way of GOD in truth; nor do You care about anyone, for You do not regard the person of men." - -16
Then they sent to Him some of the Pharisees and the Herodians, to catch Him in His words. Mark 12:13
When they had come, they said to Him, "Teacher, we know that You are true, and care about no one; for You do not regard the person of men, but teach the way of GOD in truth. It is lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?" - -14
And as He said these things to them, the scribes and the Pharisees began to assail Him vehemently, and to cross-examine Him about many things. Luke 11:53
Lying in wait for Him, and seeking to catch Him in something He might say, that they might accuse Him. - -54
Adherents Excommunicated
His parents said these things because they feared the Jews, for the Jews had agreed already that if anyone confessed that He was Christ, he would be put out of the synagogue. John 9:22
Therefore his parents said, "He is of age; ask him." (Fear of man prevailed.) - -23
