Chapter 8
Christ Betrayed and Apprehended
Prophecy, Opposed by Kings
Why do the nations rage, and the people plot a vain thing? Psalm 2:1
The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD and against His Anointed saying, - -2
"Let us break their bonds in pieces and cast away their cords from us." - -3
Application
Who by the mouth of Your servant David have said: `Why did the nations rage, and the people plot vain things? Acts 4:25
The kings of the earth took their stand, and the rulers were gathered together against the LORD and against His Christ.' - -26
Death Predetermined by GOD
After the sixty-two weeks Messiah shall be cut off, but not for Himself; and the people of the prince who is to come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary. The end of it shall be with a flood, and till the end of the war desolations are determined. Daniel 9:26
"How then could the Scriptures be fulfilled, that it must happen thus?" Matthew 26:54
"I was daily with you in the temple teaching, and you did not take me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled."

Then behold, two men talked with Him, who were Moses and Elijah; Luke 9:30
Who appeared in glory and spoke of His decease which He was about to accomplish at Jerusalem. - -31 (Note 9)
Then Pilate said to them, "You take Him and judge Him according to your law." Therefore the Jews said to him, "It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death." John 18:31
That the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled which He spoke, signifying by what death He would die. - -32
Jesus answered, "You could have no power at all against Me unless it had been given you from above. Therefore the one who delivered Me to you has the greater sin." - 19:11
But those things which GOD foretold by the mouth of all His prophets, that the Christ would suffer, He has thus fulfilled. Acts 3:18
For truly against Your holy Servant Jesus, whom You anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles and the people of Israel, were gathered together. - -27
To do whatever Your hand and Your purpose determined before to be done.

Death determined by Man
Then the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders of the people assembled at the palace of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas. Matthew 26:3
And plotted to take Jesus by trickery and kill Him. - -4
But they said, "Not during the feast, lest there be an uproar among the people."

When morning came, all the chief priests and elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put Him to death.

After two days it was the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread. And the chief priests and the scribes sought how they might take Him by trickery and put Him to death. Mark 14:1
But they said, "Not during the feast, lest there be an uproar of the people." - -2
And the chief priests and the scribes sought how they might kill Him, for they feared the people. Luke 22:2
Then from that day on they plotted to put Him to death. John 11:53
Now it was Caiaphas who gave counsel to the Jews that it was expedient that one man should die for the people. - 18:14
Prophecies of Judas Iscariot
Even my own familiar friend in whom I trusted, who ate my bread, has lifted up his heel against me. Psalm 41:9
Let their habitation be desolate; let no one dwell in their tents. - 69:25
Let his days be few, and let another take his office. - 109:8
Judas instigated by the Devil
Then Satan entered Judas, surnamed Iscariot, who was numbered among the twelve. Luke 22:3
Jesus answered them, "Did I not choose you, the twelve, and one of you is a devil?" John 6:70
He spoke of Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon, for it was he who would betray Him, being one of the twelve. - -71
And supper being ended, the devil having already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son to betray Him. John 13:2
Now after the piece of bread, Satan entered him. Then Jesus said to him, "What you do, do quickly." - -27
But no one at the table knew for what reason He said this to him. - -28
For some thought, because Judas had the money box, that Jesus had said to him, "Buy those things we need for the feast," or that he should give something to the poor. - -29
Having received the piece of bread, he then went out immediately. And it was night. - -30
So, when he had gone out, Jesus said, "Now the Son of Man is glorified, and GOD is glorified in Him." - -31
Judas's Doom Foreshown
"The Son of Man indeed goes just as it is written of Him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been good for that man if he had never been born." Mark 14:21
Sale for Thirty Pieces Foretold
Then I said to them, "If it is agreeable to you, give me my wages; and if not, refrain." So they weighed out for my wages thirty pieces of silver.
Zechariah 11:12
And the Lord said to me, "Throw it to the potter" - that princely price they set on me. So I took the thirty pieces of silver and threw them into the house of the Lord for the potter. - -13
Application
But the chief priests took the silver pieces and said, "It is not lawful to put them into the treasury, because they are the price of blood." Matthew 27:6
And they took counsel and brought with them the potter's field, to bury strangers in. - -7
Therefore that field has been called the Field of Blood to this day. - -8
Then was fulfilled what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet, saying, "And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the value of Him who was priced, whom they of the children of Israel priced. - -9
"And gave them for the potter's field, as the LORD directed me." - -10
Sold for Thirty Pieces
Then one of the twelve, called Judas Iscariot went to the chief priests, Matthew 26:14
And said, "What are you willing to give me if I deliver Him to you?" And they counted out to him thirty pieces of silver. - -15
So from that time he sought opportunity to betray Him. - -16
Then Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve, went to the chief priests to betray Him to them. Mark 14:10
So when they heard it, they were glad, and promised to give him money. So he sought how he might conveniently betray Him. - -11
So he went his way and conferred with the chief priests and captains, how he might betray Him to them. Luke 22:4
And they were glad, and agreed to give him money. Luke 22:5
Then he promised and sought opportunity to betray Him to them in the absence of the multitude. - -6
Anecdotes of Judas's End
Men and brethren, this Scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spoke before by the mouth of David concerning Judas, who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus. Acts 1:16
For he was numbered with us and obtained a part in this ministry. - -17
(Now this man purchased a field with the wages of iniquity; and falling headlong, he burst open in the middle and all his entrails gushed out. - -18
And it became known to all those dwelling in Jerusalem; so that field is called in their own language, Akel Dama, that is, Field of Blood.) - -19
For it is written in the book of Psalms: `Let his habitation be desolate, and let no one live in it'; and, `let another take his office.' - -20
Christ's Agony
And He took with Him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and He began to be sorrowful and deeply distressed. Matthew 26:37
Then He said to them, "My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Stay here and watch with Me." - -38
And He took Peter, James, and John with Him, and He began to be troubled and deeply distressed. Mark 14:33
Then He said to them, "My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Stay here and watch." - -34
Then an angel appeared to Him from heaven, strengthening Him. Luke 22:43
And being in agony, He prayed more earnestly. And His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground. - -44
Apprehended
And while He was still speaking, behold, Judas one of the twelve, with a great multitude with swords and clubs, came from the chief priests and elders of the people. Matthew 26:47
Now His betrayer had given them a sign, saying, "Whomever I kiss, He is the One; seize Him." - -48
Then immediately he went up to Jesus and said, "Greetings, Rabbi!" and kissed Him. - -49
And Jesus said to him, "Friend, why have you come?" Then they came and laid hands on Jesus and took Him. - -50
And immediately, while He was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, with a great multitude with swords and clubs, came from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders. Mark 14:43
Now His betrayer had given them a signal, saying, "Whomever I kiss, He is the One; take Him and lead Him away safely." - -44
And as soon as He had come, immediately he went up to Him and said to Him, "Rabbi, Rabbi!" and kissed Him. - -45
Then they laid their hands on Him and took Him. - -46
And while He was still speaking, behold, a multitude; and he who was called Judas, one of the twelve, went before them and drew near to Jesus to kiss Him. Luke 22:47
But Jesus said to him, "Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?"

And Judas, who betrayed Him, also knew the place; for Jesus often met there with His disciples. John 18:2
Then Judas, having received a detachment of troops, and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, came there with lanterns, torches, and weapons. John 18:3
Christ's Remonstrances
In that hour Jesus said to the multitudes, "Have you come out, as against a robber, with swords and clubs to take Me? I sat daily with you, teaching in the temple, and you did not seize Me."

Then Jesus answered and said to them, "Have you come out, as against a robber, with swords and clubs to take Me? Mark 14:48
Then Jesus said to the chief priests, captains of the temple, and the elders who had come to Him, "Have you come out, as against a robber, with swords and clubs?" Luke 22:52
"When I was with you daily in the temple, you did not try to seize Me. But this is your hour, and the power of darkness." - -53
Jesus therefore, knowing all things that would come upon Him, went forward and said to them, "Whom are you seeking?" John 18:4
They answered Him, "Jesus of Nazareth," Jesus said to them, "I am He." And Judas, who betrayed Him, also stood with them. - -5
Then when He said to them, "I am He," they drew back and fell to the ground.

Disciples' Violent Defense
When those around Him saw what was going to happen, they said to Him, "Lord, shall we strike with the sword?" Luke 22:49
Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest's servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus. John 18:10
Then Jesus said to Peter, "Put your sword into the sheath. Shall I not drink the cup which My Father has given Me?" - -11
Christ Bound
And when they had bound Him, they led Him away and delivered Him to Pontius Pilate the governor. Matthew 27:2
Immediately, in the morning, the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council; and they bound Jesus, led Him away, and delivered Him to Pilate. Mark 15:1
Then the detachment of troops and the captains and the officers of the Jews arrested Jesus and bound Him.
John 18:12
Then Annas sent Him bound to Caiaphas the high priest. - -24
Led to Trial
And those who had laid hold of Jesus led Him away to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were assembled. Matthew 26:57
And they led Jesus away to the high priest; and with him were assembled all the chief priests, the elders, and the scribes. Mark 14:53
Then having arrested Him, they led Him and brought Him into the high priest's house. And Peter followed at a distance. Luke 22:54
As soon as it was day, the elders of the people, both chief priests and scribes, came together and led Him into their council, saying, - -66
Then the whole multitude of them arose and led Him to Pilate. - 23:1
And as soon as he knew that He belonged to Herod's jurisdiction, he sent Him to Herod, who was also in Jerusalem at that time. - -7
And they led Him away to Annas first, for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas who was high priest that year.
John 18:13
Then they led Jesus from Caiaphas to the Praetorium, and it was early morning. But they themselves did not go into the Praetorium, lest they should be defiled, but that they might eat the Passover.

When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he brought Jesus out and sat down in the judgment seat in a place that is called the Pavement, but in Hebrew, Gabbatha.

Forsaken by His Disciples
"But all this was done that the Scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled." Then all the disciples forsook Him and fled. Matthew 26:56
But Peter followed Him at a distance to the high priest's courtyard. And he went in and sat with the servants to see the end. - -58
Then they all forsook Him and fled. Mark 14:50
Then He asked them again, "Whom are you seeking?" And they said, "Jesus of Nazareth." John 18:7
Jesus answered, "I have told you that I am He. Therefore, if you seek Me, let these go their way." - -8
That the saying might be fulfilled which He spoke, "Of those whom You gave Me I have lost none." - -9
