Chapter 11

Christ's Dying

Prophecy of Crucifixion

I am poured out like water, and all My bones are out of joint; My heart is like wax; it has melted within Me.
Psalm 22:14
My strength is dried up like a potsherd, and My tongue clings to My jaws; you have brought Me to the dust of death.
- -15
For dogs have surrounded Me; the assembly of the wicked has enclosed Me. They pierced My hands and My feet.  - -16
He shall drink of the brook by the wayside; therefore He shall lift up the head.  - 110:7

And someone will say to him, `What are these wounds in your hands?' Then he will answer, "Those with which I was wounded in the house of my friends.'  Zechariah 13:6

And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up. John 3:14 (Note 10 pg. 127)

Christ Crucified

Then they crucified Him, and divided His garments, casting lots, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet: "They divided My garments among them, and for My clothing they cast lots."  Matthew 27:35
Sitting down, they kept watch over Him there.  - -36

Now it was the third hour, and they crucified Him.  Mark 15:25

And when they had come to the place called Calvary, there they crucified Him, and the criminals, one on the right hand and the other on the left.  Luke 23:33

And we are witnesses of all things which He did both in the land of the Jews and in Jerusalem, whom they killed by hanging on a tree.  Acts 10:39

Superscription

And the inscription of His accusation was written above: THE KING OF THE JEWS.  Mark 15:26

And they put up over His head the accusation written against Him: THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.  Matthew 27:37

And an inscription also was written over Him in letters of Greek, Latin, and Hebrew: THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.  Luke 23:38

Now Pilate wrote a title and put it on the cross. And the writing was: JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS.  John 19:19

Remarks Thereon

Then many of the Jews read this title, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, Greek, and Latin.  John 19:20
Then the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, "Do not write, `The King of the Jews,' but, `He said, "I am the King of the Jews."'"  - -21
Pilate answered, "What I have written, I have written."

Prophecy of His Drink

They also gave me gall for my food, and for my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.  Psalm 69:21

Drink Administered

And when they had come to a place called Golgotha, that is to say, place of a Skull.  Matthew 27:33
They gave Him sour wine mingled with gall to drink. But when He had tasted it, He would not drink.  - -34
Immediately one of them ran and took a sponge, filled it with sour wine and put it on a reed, and gave it to Him to drink.
- -48
Then they gave Him wine mingled with myrrh to drink, but He did not take it.  Mark 15:23
Then someone ran and filled a sponge full of sour wine, put it on a reed, and offered it to Him to drink,  - -36

And the soldiers also mocked Him, coming and offering Him sour wine, Luke 23:36

After this, Jesus, knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, "I thirst!"  John 19:28
Now a vessel full of sour wine was sitting there; and they filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on hyssop, and put it to His mouth.  - -29

Prophecy of Raiment Divided

They divide My garments among them, and for My clothing they cast lots.  Psalm 22:18

Raiment Divided

And when they crucified Him, they divided His garments, casting lots for them to determine what every man should take.  Mark 15:24

Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took His garments and made four parts, to each soldier a part, and also the tunic. Now the tunic was without seam, woven from the top in one piece.  John 19:23

They said therefore among themselves, "Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be," that the Scripture might be fulfilled which says: "They divided My garments among them, and for My clothing they cast lots." Therefore the soldiers did these things.
John 19:24

Prophecy of Insults

All those who see Me laugh Me to scorn; they shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying,  Psalm 22:7
"He trusted in the LORD, let Him rescue Him; let Him deliver Him, since He delights in Him!"  - -8
I also have become a reproach to them; when they look at me, they shake their heads.  - 109:25

Christ Insulted

And those who passed by blasphemed Him, wagging their heads,
Matthew 27:39
And saying, "You who destroy the temple and build it in three days, save Yourself! If You are the Son of GOD, come down from the cross."  - -40
Likewise the chief priests, also mocking with the scribes and elders said,  - -41
"He saved others; Himself He cannot save. If He is the King of Israel, let Him now come down from the cross, and we will believe Him."  Matthew 27:42
"He trusted in GOD; let Him deliver Him now if He will have Him; for He said, `I am the Son of GOD.'"  - -43
Some of those who stood there, when they heard that, said, "This Man is calling for Elijah!"  - -47
The rest said, "Let Him alone; let us see if Elijah will come to save Him."  - -49

And those who passed by blasphemed Him, wagging their heads and saying, "Aha! You who destroy the temple and build it in three days,  Mark 15:29
"Save Yourself, and come down from the cross!"  - -30
Likewise the chief priests also, together with the scribes, mocked and said among themselves, "He saved others, Himself he cannot save."  - -31
"Let the Christ, the King of Israel, descend now from the cross, that we may see and believe." And those who were crucified with Him reviled Him.
- -32
Some of those who stood by, when they heard it, said, "Look, He is calling for Elijah!"  - -35
Saying, "Let Him alone; let us see if Elijah will come to take Him down."
- -36

And the people stood looking on. But even the rulers with them sneered, saying, "He saved others; let Him save Himself if He is the Christ, the chosen of GOD."  Luke 23:35
And saying, "If You are the King of the Jews, save Yourself."  - -37

Spectators

And many women who followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering to Him, were there looking on from afar,
Matthew 27:55
Among whom were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of Zebedee's sons.  - -56

And a great multitude of the people followed Him, and women who also mourned and lamented Him.  Luke 23:27
And the whole crowd who came together to that sight, seeing what had been done, beat their breasts and returned.  - -48
But all His acquaintances, and the women who followed Him from Galilee, stood at a distance, watching these things.  Luke 23:49

Prophecy of Darkness

It shall come to pass in that day that there will be no light; the lights will diminish.  Zechariah 14:6
It shall be one day which is known to the LORD neither day nor night. But at evening time it shall happen that it will be light.  - -7

Darkness

Now from the sixth hour until the ninth hour there was darkness over all the land.  Matthew 27:45

And it was about the sixth hour, and there was darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour.  Luke 23:44
Then the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was torn in two.  - -45

Type of Christ Crucified - Remarkable

I will fasten him as a peg in a secure place, and he will become a glorious throne to his father's house.
Isaiah 22:23
And they will hang on him all the glory of his father's house, the offspring and the issue, all vessels of small quantity, from the cups to all the pitchers.  - -24
`In that day,' says the LORD of hosts, `the peg that is fastened in the secure place will be removed and be cut down and fall, and the burden that was on it will be cut off; for the LORD has spoken.'"  - -25

Christ's Dying Prayer

And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, "Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?" that is, "My GOD, My GOD, why have You forsaken Me?"
Matthew 27:46

And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, "Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?" which is translated, "My GOD, My GOD, why have You forsaken Me?"  Mark 15:34

Then Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do." And they divided His garments and cast lots.  Luke 23:34

Death of Jesus Christ

Jesus, when He had cried out again with a loud voice, yielded up His spirit.  Matthew 27:50

And Jesus cried out with a loud voice, and breathed His last.  Mark 15:37

And when Jesus had cried out with a loud voice, He said, "Father, `into Your hands I commend My spirit.'"
Luke 23:46

So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, "It is finished!" And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.  John 19:30
