Chapter 12

Christ Dead and Buried

Inferences from Christ's Death

"Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one's life for his friends."  John 15:13

"Men of Israel, hear these words; Jesus of Nazareth, a Man attested by GOD to you by miracles, wonders, and signs which GOD did through Him in your midst, as you yourselves also know.  Acts 2:22
"Him, being delivered by the determined counsel and foreknowledge of GOD, you have taken by lawless hands, have crucified, and put to death;"  - -23
"Which of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? And they killed those who foretold the coming of the Just One, of whom you now have become the betrayers and murderers."  - 7:52

But we preach Christ crucified, to the Jews a stumbling block and to the Greeks foolishness.  1 Corinthians 1:23
For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified.  - 2:2

This is a faithful saying: For if we died with Him, we shall also live with Him.  2 Timothy 2:11
Therefore, since Christ suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same mind, he who has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin.  1 Peter 4:1
That he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh for the lusts of men, but for the will of GOD.  - -2

Beloved, if GOD so loved us, we also ought to love one another.  1 John 4:11

Earthquake

And behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth quaked, and the rocks were split.  Matthew 27:51

Reflections Upon It

Now when the centurion and those with him, who were guarding Jesus, saw the earthquake and the things that had happened, they feared greatly, saying, "Truly this was the Son of GOD!"  Matthew 27:54

Now when the centurion, who stood opposite Him, saw that He cried out like this and breathed His last, he said, "Truly this Man was the Son of GOD!"  Mark 15:39

Now when the centurion saw what had happened, he glorified GOD, saying, "Certainly this was a righteous Man!"  Luke 23:47

Prophecy of Christ's Body Pierced

And I will pour on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem the Spirit of grace and supplication; then they will look on Me whom they have pierced; they will mourn for Him as one mourns for his only son, and grieve for Him as one grieves for a firstborn.  Zechariah 12:10
In that day there shall be a great mourning in Jerusalem, like the mourning at Hadad Rimmon in the plain of Megiddo.  - -11

Mary Forewarned

(Yes, a sword will pierce through your own soul also), that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.  Luke 2:35

Mary and other Holy WomenBeholding

Now there stood by the cross of Jesus His mother, and His mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.  John 19:25

Christ's Dead Body Pierced

But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out.  John 19:34
And he who has seen has testified, and his testimony is true; and he knows that he is telling the truth, so that you may believe.  - -35

Typical Application

This is He who came by water and blood - Jesus Christ; not only by water, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit who bears witness, because the Spirit is truth.  1 John 5:6

Type in the Passover

They shall leave none of it until morning, nor break one of its bones. According to all the ordinances of the Passover they shall keep it.
Numbers 9:12

Application

For these things were done that the Scripture should be fulfilled, "Not one of His bones shall be broken."  John 19:36
And again another Scripture says, "They shall look on Him whom they pierced."  - -37

The Bones of Christ not Broken

Therefore, because it was the Preparation Day, that the bodies should not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for the Sabbath was a high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.  John 19:31
Then the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first and of the other who was crucified with Him.  - -32
But when they came to Jesus and saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs.  - -33

Christ's Dead Body Begged

Now when evening had come, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who himself had also become a disciple of Jesus.  Matthew 27:57
This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded the body to be given to him.  - -58

Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent council member, who was himself waiting for the kingdom of GOD, coming and taking courage, went in to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.  Mark 15:43
Pilate marveled that He was already dead; and summoning the centurion, he asked him if He had been dead for some time.  - -44
And when he found out from the centurion, he granted the body to Joseph.  - -45

And behold, there was a man named Joseph, a council member, a good and just man.  Luke 23:50
He had not consented to their counsel and deed. He was from Arimathea, a city of the Jews, who himself was also waiting for the kingdom of GOD.  - -51
This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.  - -52

After this, Joseph of Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly, for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus; and Pilate gave him permission. So he came and took the body of Jesus.  John 19:38

Christ's Funeral Prophesied of

He was taken from prison and from judgment, and who will declare His generation? For He was cut off from the land of the living; for the transgressions of My people He was stricken.
Isaiah 53:8
And they made His grave with the wicked - but with the rich at His death, because He had done no violence, nor was any deceit in His mouth.  - -9

His Funeral

And when Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth,  Matthew 27:59
And laid it in his new tomb which he had hewn out of the rock; and he rolled a large stone against the door of the tomb, and departed.  - -60

Then he bought fine linen, took Him down, and wrapped Him in the linen. And he laid Him in a tomb which had been hewn out of the rock, and rolled a stone against the door of the tomb.  Mark 15:46

Then he took it down, wrapped it in linen, and laid it in a tomb that was hewn out of the rock, where no one had ever lain before.  Luke 23:53

And Nicodemus, who first came to Jesus by night, also came, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds.  John 19:39
Then they took the body of Jesus, and bound it in strips of linen with the spices, as the custom of the Jews is to bury.  - -40
Now in the place where He was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid.  - -41

So there they laid Jesus, because of the Jews' Preparation Day, for the tomb was nearby.  - -42

Reflection Thereon

Now when they had fulfilled all that was written concerning Him, they took Him down from the tree and laid Him in a tomb.  Acts 13:29

Spectators at the Funeral

And Mary Magdalene was there, and the other Mary, sitting opposite the tomb.  Matthew 27:61

And Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses observed where He was laid.  Mark 15:47

And the women who had come with Him from Galilee followed after, and they observed the tomb and how His body was laid.  Luke 23:55
