Chapter 1

Christ's Forerunner John the Baptist

Predicted as Elijah.

Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD.
 Malachi 4:5
And he will turn the hearts of the fathers to the Children, and the hearts of the children to their Fathers, lest I come and strike the earth with a curse.  - -- 6

"And if you are willing to receive it, he is Elijah who is to come."
Matthew 11:14

"He will also go before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah, `to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children,' and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make ready a people prepared for the
LORD."  Luke 1:17

Accomplishment

And they asked Him, saying, "Why do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?"  Mark 9:11
Then He answered and told them, "Elijah does come first, and restores all things.  And how is it written concerning
The Son of Man, that He must suffer many things and be treated with contempt?   - - 12
"But I say to you that Elijah has also come, and they did to Him whatever they wished, as it is written of him."
- - 13
And His disciples asked Him, saying, "Why then do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?"  Matthew 17:10
Then Jesus answered and said to them, "Elijah truly is coming first and will restore all things.  -- 11
"But I say to you that Elijah has come already, and they did not know him but did to him whatever they wished.  Likewise the Son of Man is also about to suffer at their hands."  -- 12
Then the disciples understood that He spoke to them of John the Baptist.
- - 13

Denies Being Elijah

Now this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, "Who are you?"
John 1:19
He confessed, and did not deny, but confessed, "I am not the Christ."  - - 20
And they asked him, "What then?  Are you Elijah?"  He said, "I am not."  "Are you the Prophet?"  And he answered, "No." -21
Then they said to him, "Who are you, that we may give an answer to those who sent us?  What do you say about yourself?"  - -22
He said:  "I am `The voice of one crying in the wilderness: "Make straight the way of the LORD,"' As the prophet Isaiah said."  --23
Now those who were sent were from the Pharisees.  - -24

John's Coming Foretold

"Behold, I send My messenger, and he will prepare the way before Me.  Malachi 3:1

For this is he who was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah, saying: "The voice of one crying in the wilderness: `Prepare the way of the LORD, make His path straight.'"  Matthew 3:3

This Prophecy Fulfilled

"For this is he of whom it is written: `Behold, I send My messenger before Your face, who will prepare Your way before You.'  Matthew 11:10

As it is written in the Prophets:  "Behold, I send My messenger before Your face, who will prepare Your way before You."   Mark 1:2
"The voice of one crying in the wilderness: `Prepare the way of the LORD, make His paths straight.'" - -3

Every valley shall be filled and every mountain and hill brought low; and the crooked places shall be made straight
And the rough ways made smooth; Luke 3:5
And all flesh shall see the salvation of GOD.'"  - -6
"This is he of whom it is written: `Behold, I send My messenger before Your face, who will prepare Your way before You.'  - 7:27

John's Preaching Foretold

The voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the LORD; Make straight in the desert a highway for our GOD.  Isaiah 40:3
Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill shall be made low; the crooked places shall be made straight, And the rough places smooth; - -4
The glory of the LORD shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together; for the mouth of the LORD has spoken."  - -5

Date of His Ministry

Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea, Herod the tetrarch
of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of Iturea and the region of Trachonitis and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene,  Luke 3:1
Annas and Caiaphas being high priests, the Word of GOD came to John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness. - -2

John Commences Preaching

In those days John the Baptist came preaching in the wilderness of Judea,  Matthew 3:1
And saying, "Repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!" - -2

And he went into all the region around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the remission of sins, Luke 3:3
As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, saying: "The voice of one crying in the wilderness: `Prepare the way of the LORD, make His paths straight. - -4

"That word you know, which was proclaimed throughout all Judea, and began from Galilee after the baptism which John preached:   Acts 10:37

"After John had first preached, before His coming, the baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel.  - 13:24

His Testimony of Christ

And he preached saying, "There comes One after me who is mightier than I, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to stoop down and loose.  Mark 1:7

Now as the people were in expectation, and all reasoned in their hearts about John, whether he was the Christ or not,
Luke 3:15
John answered, saying to them all, "I indeed baptize you with water; but One mightier than I is coming, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to loose.  He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.  - -16
"His winnowing fan is in His hand, and He will thoroughly purge His threshing floor, and gather the wheat into His barn; but the Chaff He will burn with unquenchable fire."  - -17
And with many other exhortations he preached to the people. - -18

There was a man sent from GOD, whose name was John. John 1:6
This man came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all through him might believe.  - -7
He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.  - -8
John bore witness of Him and cried out, saying, "This was He of whom I said, `He who comes after me is preferred before me, for He was before me.'"
 - -15
Now this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent Priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, "Who are you?"
 - -19

And they asked him, saying, "Why then do you baptize if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?"  - -25
John answered them saying, "I baptize with water, but there stands One among you whom you do not know. - -26
"It is He who, coming after me, is preferred before me, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to loose."  - -27
These things were done in Bethabara beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing.  - -28
"This is He of whom I said, `After me comes a Man who is preferred before me, for He was before me.'  - -30
"I did not know Him; but that He should be revealed to Israel, therefore I came baptizing with water."  - -31
And they came to John and said to him, "Rabbi, He who was with you beyond the Jordan, to whom You have testified - behold, He is baptizing, and All are coming to Him!"  - 3:26
John answered and said, "A man can receive nothing unless it has been given to him from heaven. - -27
"You yourselves bear me witness, that I said, `I am not the Christ,' but `I have been sent before Him.'  - -28
"He who has the bride is the bridegroom; but the friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears Him, rejoices greatly because of the bridegroom's voice. Therefore this joy of mine is fulfilled.  - -29
"He must increase, but I must decrease.  - -30
"He who comes from above is above all; he who is of the earth is earthly and speaks of the Earth. He who comes from heaven is above all.  - -31
"And what He has seen and heard, that He testifies; and no one receives His testimony.  - -32

"He who has received His testimony has certified that GOD is true.  - -33

"And as John was finishing his course, he said, `Who do you think I am? I am not He. But behold, there comes One after me, the sandals of whose feet I am not worthy to loose.'  Acts 13:25

John Expresses Doubt

And when John had heard in prison about the works of Christ, he sent two of the disciples,  Matthew 11:2
And said to Him, "Are You the Coming One, or do we look for another?"  - -3 (See Note 1, pg. 125)

Then the disciples of John reported to him concerning all these things.
Luke 7:18
And John, calling two of his disciples to him, sent them to Jesus, saying, "Are You the Coming One, or do we look for another?"  - -19
When the men had come to Him, they said, "John the Baptist has sent us to You, saying, `Are You the Coming One, or do we look for another?'"  - -20

Jesus' Stern Warning to John
Jesus answered and said to them, "Go and tell John the things which you hear and see: Matthew 11:4
"The blind receive their sight and the lame walk; the lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear; the dead are raised up and the poor have the gospel preached to them.  - -5
"And blessed is he who is not offended because of Me." - -6 (See Note 2)

Then Jesus answered and said to them, "Go tell John the things you have seen and heard: that the blind See, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf Hear, the dead are raised, the poor have the gospel preached to them.  Luke 7:22
"And blessed is he who is not offended because of Me."  - -23

John's Testimony Appealed to

"If I bear witness of Myself, My witness is not true.  John 5:31
"There is another who bears witness of Me, and I know that the witness which He witnesses of Me is true.  - -32
"You have sent to John, and he has borne witness to the truth.  - -33
"Yet I do not receive testimony from man, but I say these things that you may be saved.  - -34
"He was the burning and shining lamp, and you were willing for a time to rejoice in his light.  - -35

Then many came to Him and said, "John performed no sign, but all the things that John spoke about this Man were true."
 - 10:41

Christ's Testimony of John

As they departed, Jesus began to say to the multitudes concerning John: "What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind?"  Matthew 11:7
"But what did you go out to see? A man clothed in soft Garments? Indeed, those who wear soft clothing are in Kings' houses."  - -8
"But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I say to you, and more than a prophet."  - -9
"Assuredly, I say to you, among those born of women there has not risen one greater than John the Baptist; but he who
Is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.  - -11
"And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and the violent take it by force.
Matthew 11:12 (See Note 3 pg.125)

"But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I say to you, and more than a prophet.  Luke 7:26
"For I say to you, among those born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist; but he who is least in the kingdom of GOD is greater than he."  - -28

Dilemma of Unbelievers

Now when He came into the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people confronted Him as He was teaching, and
Said, "By what authority are You doing these things? And who gave You this authority?"  Matthew 21:23
But Jesus answered and said to them, "I also will ask you one thing, which if you tell Me, I likewise will tell you by what
Authority I do these things:  - -24
"The baptism of John, where was it from? From heaven or from men?" And they reasoned among themselves, saying "If we say, `From heaven,' He will say to us, `Why then did you not believe him?'  - -25
"But if we say, `From men,' we fear the multitude, for all count John as a prophet."  - -26
So they answered Jesus and said, "We do not know." And He said to them, "Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.  - -27

And spoke to Him, saying, "Tell us by what authority are You doing these things? Or who is he who gave You this authority?"  Luke 20:2
But He answered and said to them, "I will also ask you one thing, and answer Me:  - -3
"The baptism of John - was it from heaven or from men?"  - -4
And they reasoned among themselves, saying, "If we say, `From Heaven,' He will say, `Why then did you not believe him?'  - -5
"But if we say, `From men,' all the people will stone us, for they are persuaded that John was a prophet."  - -6
So they answered that they did not know where it was from.  - -7
And Jesus said to them, "Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things."  - -8

John's Reputation

For Herod had laid hold of John and bound him, and put him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife.  Matthew 14:3
For John had said to him, "It is not lawful for you to have her."  - -4
(See Note 4 pg. 125)
And although he wanted to put him to death, he feared the multitude, because they counted him as a prophet.  - -5
"For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him; but tax collectors and harlots believed him; and when you saw it, you did not afterward relent and believe him.  - 21:32

And all the people heard Him, even the tax collectors justified GOD, having been baptized with the baptism of John.
Luke 7:29

Obloquy (Abusive Language/discrediting) and Imprisonment

"For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, `He has a demon.'  Matthew 11:18

But Herod the tetrarch, being rebuked by him concerning Herodias, his brother Philip's wife, and for all the evils which Herod had done,  Luke 3:19
Also added this, above all, that he shut John up in prison.  - -20
But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel of GOD for themselves, not having been baptized by him.  - 7:30
"For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and they say, `He has a demon.'  - -33

Martyrdom

So she having been prompted by her mother, said, "Give me John the Baptist's head here on a platter."  Matthew 14:8
And the king was sorry; nevertheless, because of the oaths and because of those who sat with him at the table, he commanded it to be given to her.  - -9
So he sent and had John beheaded in prison.  - -10
And his head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother.  - -11
Then his disciples came and took away the body and buried it, and went and told Jesus.  - -12

So she went out and said to her mother, "What shall I ask?" And she said, "The head of John the Baptist."  Mark 7:24
Immediately she came in with haste to the king and asked, saying, "I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter."  - -25
And the king was exceedingly sorry yet, because of the oaths and because of those who sat with him, he did not want to refuse her.  - -26
And immediately the king sent an executioner and commanded his head to be brought. And he went and beheaded him in prison, - -27
And brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the girl; and the girl gave it to her mother.  - -28

Herod's Conscience

Now King Herod heard of Him, for His name had become well known. And he said, "John the Baptist is risen from the dead, and therefore these powers are at work in him."  Mark 6:14
But when Herod heard, he said, "This is John, whom I beheaded; he has been raised from the dead!"  - -16
