The Desires of Your Heart
Most people who know me know I play the trumpet. They know how much I love music and that I am involved in musical things. They know music is an important part of my life. What they may not know is God gave me the desire to make music a part of my life. Then, God gave me opportunities and skills to make music a part of my life. And, then, God gave me the opportunity to give my music back to Him and make it part of my ministry.
Psalm 37:4 says, "Delight thyself also in the Lord; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart." Delighting ourselves in the Lord means that we are happy with God as our Savior and as our guide. If I delight in the Lord, then I will be content with what God has in store for me as I walk with Him. The second half of this verse says, "and he will give thee the desires of thine heart." I believe the meaning of this is two-fold. (Remember the condition of delighting in the Lord.) First, as long as we delight in the Lord, the desires in our heart are the desires God has put there. In my life, an example of this would be, the desire to love music and to play music on my trumpet was put in my heart by God. I can't explain to anyone why I enjoy playing trumpet so much other than to say God put the desire in my heart. The second part of this follows naturally--since God put the desires in our heart in the first place He will grant the desires of our heart because they line up with His will for us. God allows me the opportunity to play trumpet on many occasions and I am thankful--for this satisfies the desires of my heart.
There is one problem with this verse. There will always be some who say God gave them the desire to do something that does not line up with what the Bible teaches. This is not true. The Bible is the final authority for our lives. The key to discerning the truth about this is related to how much a person is truly delighting themselves in the Lord. If I am truly seeking God in all parts of my life the desires in my heart will be consistent with the Word of God found in the Holy Bible.
I encourage you to truly delight in the Lord and seek the desires He has put in your heart. You can then be sure that the Lord is faithful and will grant those desires.
