Soar Like an Eagle
Isaiah 40:28-31 "Do you not know? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. {29} He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. {30} Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; {31} but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint."
Let's read that again from a different version.
Amplified Bible - Isaiah 40:28:31 - "Have you not known? Have you not heard? The everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth, dows not faint or grow weary; there is no searching of His understanding. [29] He gives power to the faint and weary, and to him who has no might He increases strength [causing it to multiply and making it to abound]. [30] Even youths shall faint and be weary, and [selected] young men shall feebly stumble and fall exhausted. [31] But those who wait for the Lord [who expect, look for, and hope in Him] shall change and renew their strength and power; they shall lift their wings and mount up [close to God] the eagles [mount up to the sun]; they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint or become tired."
Let's look at a couple of the key words and phrases in this passage.
"hope in" - to expect, patiently wait for, and hope. This is the essence of living by faith. When we hope in God we have expectations in Him. True hope will wait patiently for God to do what He says He will do.
"soar" - to ascend, go up, rise, to grow, bring up, lift up, be high, be exalted, to travel from a lower elevation to a higher one.
"Those who hope in the Lord" Why should we hope?
God is faithful to His people.
Deuteronomy 7:9 "Know therefore that the LORD your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commands."
Psalms 25:10 "All the ways of the LORD are loving and faithful for those who keep the demands of his covenant."
God loves His people and He will always be faithful to us. Faithfulness is part of the character of God--He cannot be unfaithfull.
God is faithful to His promises:
Psalms 145:13 "Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and your dominion endures through all generations. The LORD is faithful to all his promises and loving toward all he has made."
God's people live by promises and not explanations. God's salvation is based on His promises and our relationship is based on His promises. Everything we have is a result of His promises.
How do we hope?
By standing on the word of God
Expecting God to be faithful.
Waiting for God to be faithful.
Eagles soar because God created them to soar.
Some eagles can cover 200 miles of desert--searching for food--and hardly beat a wing.
The obvious question is: how can they do that?
Once they get up to a certain height they take advantage of every single up-draft.
In the original Hebrew the words used for Holy Spirit of God literally mean the breath of God. (Ruach HaKodesh)
We can soar because the Holy Spirit--the breath of God-- is the wind beneath our wings.
I was in high school in the late 70s and remember well the song, "Fly Like An Eagle" by Steve Miller Band. Let me share some of the lyrics with you.
"I'm going to fly like an eagle...to the sea, fly like and eagle let my spirit carry me..."
We must not rely on our spirit to carry us anywhere--the Holy Spirit, on the other hand, is able to carry me where ever I need to go.
This passage in Isaiah tells us that God created us to soar like the eagle. But we have to know how to get up there in order to soar. We are created to soar with the Holy Spirit.
We are created by God
In the image of God
to have fellowship with God.
On the ground eagles are somewhat awkward and clumsy.
On the ground represents when we are trying to do things of our own power--we are clumsy and make many mistakes.
When we are soaring with God then we are graceful in the issues of life. We are not relying on our own power but being guided by God.
On the ground an eagle can't respond to every gust of wind. But, in the air, as they soar, they can respond to every little gust. When we are soaring with God then we can be more responsive to the direction of the Holy Spirit.
There are many different kinds of eagles--each one a little different but perfectly made for their environment and situation.
We are like eagles in that we are created by God to be different and perfectly made for the situation God puts us in.
We have the exact gifts and skills we need to do the things God wants us to do.
Let us soar like as eagle as God empowers us through His Holy Spirit which is the wind beneath our wings.
