Chapter 5
Opinions Concerning Christ
Public Fame
And the report of this went out into all that land. Matthew 9:26
But when they had departed, they spread the news about Him in all that country. - -31
And immediately His fame spread throughout al the region of Galilee. Mark 1:28
But he went out and began to proclaim it freely, and to spread the matter, so that Jesus could no longer openly enter the city, but was outside in deserted places; and they came to Him from every quarter. - -45
And again He entered Capernaum after some days, and it was heard that He was in the house. - 2:1
And those who saw it told them how it happened to him who had been demon-possessed, and about the swine. - 5:16
And when they came out of the boat, immediately the people recognized Him. - 6:54
And from there He arose and went to the region of Tyre and Sidon. And He entered and wanted no one to know it, but He could not be hidden. Mark 7:24
Then He commanded them that they should tell no one; but the more He commanded them, the more widely they proclaimed it. - -36
Then Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee, and news of Him went out through all the surrounding region. Luke 4:14
And the report about Him went out into every place in the surrounding region. - -37
Then the report went around concerning Him all the more; and great multitudes came together to hear, and to be healed by Him of their infirmities. - 5:15
And this report about Him went throughout all Judea and all the surrounding region. - 7:17
When those who fed them saw what had happened, they fled and told it in the city and in the country. - 8:34
Popular Curiosity Excited
When they found Him, they said to Him, "Everyone is looking for You."
Mark 1:37
Immediately when they saw Him, all the people were greatly amazed, and running to Him, greeted Him. - 9:15
And Herod said, "John I have beheaded, but who is this of whom I hear such things?" And he sought to see Him. Luke 9:9
And hearing a multitude passing by, he asked what it meant. - 18:36
So they told him that Jesus of Nazareth was passing by. - -37
Now when Herod saw Jesus, he was exceedingly glad; for he had desired for a long time to see Him, because he had heard many things about Him, and he hoped to see some miracle done by Him. - 23:8
When the people therefore saw that Jesus was not there, nor His disciples, they also got into boats and came to Capernaum, seeking Jesus. John 6:24
And when they found Him on the other side of the sea, they said to Him, "Rabbi, when did You come here?" - -25
Then the Jews sought Him at the feast, and said, "Where is He?" - 7:11
Then some of them from Jerusalem said, "Is this not He whom they seek to kill?" - - 25
Therefore the people, who were with Him when He called Lazarus out of his tomb and raised him from the dead, bore witness. - 12:17
For this reason the people also met Him, because they heard that He had done this sign. - -18
The Pharisees therefore said among themselves, "You see that you are accomplishing nothing. Look, the world has gone after Him!" - -19
Questions Profounded by Christ and Others
And they said to Him, "By what authority are You doing these things? And who gave You this authority to do these things?" Mark 11:28
But Jesus answered and said to them, "I will also ask you one question; then answer Me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things." - -29
When Pilate heard of Galilee, he asked if the Man were a Galilean. Luke 23:6
Then they said to Him, "Who are You?" And Jesus said to them, "Just what I have been saying to you from the beginning." John 8:25
Then the Jews surrounded Him and said to Him, "How long to You keep us in doubt? If You are the Christ tell us plainly." - 10:24
Then they sought Jesus, and spoke among themselves as they stood in the temple, "What do you think - that He will not come to the feast?" - 11:56
Christ's Inquiry of Opinions
When Jesus came into the region of Caesarea Philippi, He asked His disciples, saying, "Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?" Matthew 16:13
He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?" - -15
Now Jesus and His disciples went out to the towns of Caesarea Philippi; and on the road He asked His disciples, saying to them, "Who do men say that I am?" Mark 8:27
And they answered, "John the Baptist; but some say, Elijah; and others, one of the prophets." - -28
He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?" And Peter answered and said to Him, "You are the Christ." - -29
Then Jesus said to the twelve, "Do you also want to go away?" John 6:67
Then Simon Peter answered Him, "LORD, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life." - -68
So when He had washed their feet, taken His garments, and sat down again, He said to them, "Do you know what I have done to you?" - 13:12
"But now I go away to Him who sent Me, and none of you asks Me, `Where are You going?'" - 16:5
"But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart." - -6
Supposed to be John, Elijah, or Jeremiah
At that time Herod the tetrarch heard the report about Jesus. Matthew 14:1
And said to his servants, "This is John the Baptist; he is risen from the dead, and therefore these powers are at work in him." - -2
So they said, "Some say John the Baptist, some Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets."
- 16:14
He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?" - -15
Now Herod the tetrarch heard of all that was done by Him; and he was perplexed, because it was said by some that John had risen from the dead. Luke 9:7
And by some that Elijah had appeared, and by others that one of the old prophets had risen again. - -8
Admiration at His Miracles
And the men marveled, saying, "Who can this be, that even the winds and the sea obey Him?" Matthew 8:27
Now when the multitudes saw it, they marveled and glorified GOD, who had given such power to men. - 9:8
Then they were all amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, "What is this? What new doctrine is this? For with authority He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him." Mark 1:27
And they were astonished beyond measure, saying, "He has done all things well, He makes both the deaf to hear and the mute to speak." - 7:37
Jesus answered and said to them, "I did one work, and you all marvel." John 7:21
Admiration at His Doctrines
And so it was, when Jesus had ended these sayings, that the people were astonished at His teaching.
Matthew 7:28
For He taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes. - -29
When they had heard these words, they marveled, and left Him and went their way. - 22:22
And when the multitudes heard this, they were astonished at His teaching. - -33
And they were astonished at His teaching, for He taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes. Mark 1:22
So all bore witness to Him, and marveled at the gracious words which proceeded out of His mouth. And they said, "Is this not Joseph's son." Luke 4:22
And they were astonished at His teaching, for His word was with authority. - -33
Royal Honors Offered
Then they brought him to Jesus. And they threw their own garments on the colt, and they set Jesus on him.
Luke 19:35
And as He went, they spread their clothes on the road. - -36
Then, as He was now drawing near the descent of the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise GOD with a loud voice for all the mighty works they had seen. - -37
Saying, "Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the LORD!' Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!" - -38
And some of the Pharisees called to Him from the crowd, "Teacher, rebuke Your disciples." - -39
But He answered and said to them, "I tell you that if these should keep silent, the stones would immediately cry out." - -40
Therefore when Jesus perceived that they were about to come and take Him by force to make Him king, he departed again to a mountain by Himself alone. John 6:15
Not Understood
But they did not understand this saying, and were afraid to ask Him. Mark 9:32
But they did not understand this saying, and it was hidden from them so that they did not perceive it; and they were afraid to ask Him about this saying. Luke 9:45
But they understood none of these things; this saying was hidden from them, and they did not know the things which were spoken. - 18:34
"What is this thing that He said, `You will seek Me and not find Me, and where I am you cannot come'?" John 7:36
They did not understand that He spoke to them of the Father. - 8:27
"Why do you not understand My speech? Because you are not able to listen to My word." - -43
Jesus used this illustration, but they did not understand the things which he spoke to them. - 10:6
Jesus answered and said to him, "What I am doing you do not understand now, but you will know after this." - 13:7
"And where I go you know, and the way you know." John 14:4
Thomas said to Him, "LORD, we do not know where You are going, and how can we know the way?" - -5
Then some of His disciples said among themselves, "What is this that He says to us, `A little while, and you will not see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me'; and, `because I go to the Father'?" - 16:17
They said therefore, "What is this that He says, `A little while'? We do not know what He is saying." - -18
Now Jesus knew that they desired to ask Him, and He said to them, "Are you inquiring among yourselves about what I said, `A little while, and you will not see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me'?" - -19
Misunderstood
The Jews then murmured against Him, because He said, "I am the bread which came down from heaven?" John 6:41
And they said, "Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How is it then that He says, `I have come down from heaven'?" - -42
Jesus therefore answered and said to them, "Do not murmur among yourselves." - -43
Misunderstood by the Disciples
Then this saying went out among the brethren that this disciple would not die. Yet Jesus did not say to him that he would not die, but, "If I will that he remain till I come, what is that to you?" John 21:23
Discordant Opinions
(Disagreeing or Quarrelsome)
And when He said these things, all His adversaries were put to shame; and all the multitude rejoiced for all the glorious things that were done by Him. Luke 13:17
And there was much murmuring among the people concerning Him. Some said, "He is good"; others said, "No, on the contrary, He deceives the people." John 7:12
However, no one spoke openly of Him for fear of the Jews. - -13
So there was a division among the people because of Him. - -43
Now some of them wanted to take Him, but no one laid hands on Him. - -44
Then the officers came to the chief priests and Pharisees, who said to them, "Why have you not brought Him?"
- -45
The officers answered, "No man ever spoke like this Man!" - -46
So they again called the man who was blind, and said to him, "Give GOD the glory! We know that this Man is a sinner." - 9:24
He answered and said, "Whether He is a sinner or not I do not know. One thing I know: that though I was blind, now I see." - -25
He answered them, "I told you already, and you did not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you also want to become His disciples?" - -27
Then they reviled him and said, "You are His disciple, but we are Moses' disciples." - -28
The man answered and said to them, "Why, this is a marvelous thing, that you do not know where He is from, and yet He has opened my eyes!" - -30
Then the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered a council and said, "What shall we do? For this Man works many signs." - 11:47
"If we let Him alone like this, everyone will believe in Him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and nation." John 11:48
Public Fear
And behold, the whole city came out to meet Jesus. And when they saw Him, they begged Him to depart from their region. Matthew 8:34
Now those who fed the swine fled, and they told it in the city and in the country. And they went out to see what it was that had happened. Mark 5:14
Then they came to Jesus, and saw the one who had been demon-possessed and had the legion, sitting and clothed and in his right mind. And they were afraid.
- -15
Then they began to plead with Him to depart from their region. - -17
Then the whole multitude of the surrounding region of the Gadarenes asked Him to depart from them, for they were seized with great fear. And He got into the boat and returned. Luke 8:37
Dishonorable Opinions
"The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, `Look a gluttonous man and a winebibber, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!' But wisdom is justified by her children." Matthew 11:19
Then His disciples came and said to Him, "Did You know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this saying?" - 15:12
Therefore many of His disciples, when they heard this, said, "This is a hard saying; who can understand it?"
John 6:60
From that time many of His disciples went back and walked with Him no more. - -66
The Jews answered Him, saying, "For a good work we do not stone You, but for blasphemy, and because You, being a Man, make Yourself GOD." - 10:33
His Company-Keeping Objected
And when the Pharisees saw it, they said to His disciples, "Why does your Teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?" Matthew 9:11
But their scribes and the Pharisees murmured against His disciples, saying "Why do You eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?" Luke 5:30
"The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, `Look, a glutton and a winebibber, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!'" - 7:34
Then all the tax collectors and the sinners drew near to Him to hear Him. - 15:1
And the Pharisees and scribes murmured, saying, "This man receives sinners and eats with them." - -2
But when they saw it, they all murmured, saying, "He has gone to be a guest with a man who is a sinner."
- 19:7
Said to Have a Devil
But the Pharisees said, "He casts out demons by the ruler of the demons." Matthew 9:34
"It is enough for a disciple that he be like his teacher, and a servant like his master. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebub, how much more will they call those of his household!" Matthew 10:25
But when the Pharisees heard it they said, "This fellow does not cast out demons except by Beelzebub, the ruler of the demons." - 12:24
And the scribes who came down from Jerusalem said, "He has Beelzebub," and, "By the ruler of the demons He casts out demons." Mark 3:22
But some of them said, "He casts out demons by Beelzebub, the ruler of the demons." Luke 11:15
Jesus answered, "I do not have a demon; but I honor My Father, and you dishonor Me." John 8:49
Then the Jews said to Him, "Now we know that You have a demon! Abraham is dead, and the prophets; and You say, `If anyone keeps My word he shall never taste death'." - -52
"Are You greater than our father Abraham, who is dead? And the prophets are dead. Whom do You make Yourself out to be?" - -53
Therefore there was a division again among the Jews because of these sayings. - 10:19
And many of them said, "He has a demon and is mad. Why do you listen to Him?" - -20
Others said, "These are not the words of one who has a demon. Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?" - -21
